Grief Is Not Just an Emotion

A brief reflection on grief as attention, memory, and changed perception.

Grief is not only sadness. It can be a change in how the world appears.

It may sharpen certain details: an empty chair, a particular hour of the evening, the sound of a phone that no longer rings with the same possibility. It can make ordinary places feel newly symbolic. It can make the body feel older, slower, or strangely alert.

Calling grief an emotion is not wrong, but it may be too small. Grief is also attention. It is memory becoming physical. It is love continuing after the conditions of daily life have changed.
